History
Founded in 1772 by Moravian settlers, Salem Academy has been in continuous operation for more than 230 years. Initially a day school, it added boarding facilities in 1802. During the 1860's college-level courses were added, and Salem College was chartered in 1866. In 1930, the Academy and College were separated: both institutions remained on the original campus. Throughout its history, Salem Academy has maintained its original commitment to the education of women. It endeavors to provide "a thorough preparation for a continuing education and a fulfilling personal life, a spiritual and ethical climate in all phases of school life, and a program promoting mental and physical wellbeing." While the Academy retains its affiliation with the Moravian Church, students of various religious backgrounds are enrolled.
