January 29, 2019 | Canterbury School

This event is an opportunity for NCAIS educators involved in all aspects of service learning to come together in community to learn, share, and collaborate around the topic of service learning. We are #BetterTogether. How can we leverage what we are doing to strengthen the NCAIS community and beyond? Our day will include an hour of formal programming as well as lunch, but will mostly be an opportunity for those doing the same work to spend time getting to know each other, learning about each school's service learning program, and brainstorming ideas for growth and development. We hope that you will join us!

Agenda:

10:00am          Welcome and Opening Activity

10:30am          The Heart of the Matter: Why We Prioritize Service Learning | Melanie Woodard & Roxanne Gilgallon

Compassion is a strength and a wise way of being in the world.  More than an emotion, compassion is a motivational stance to recognize and respond to the suffering of others and to cultivate an open-hearted, willingness  to deepen our connection to each other and our communities. Compassion is relational.
  • Where we see much that is negative and despairing in the world, compassion stands bravely and seeks transformation.
  • What in each of us needs to respond more resiliently to this call?
  • How do we train ourselves and others to receive and offer caring in our chosen work?
  • Where are the possibilities for serving, learning, and greater wellbeing through compassionate practices?
  • Come, care, converse, and connect!
