I will demonstrate, explain and justify methods and activities based on TPR and TPRS principles that I have crafted over my ten years of teaching Spanish to middle schoolers. This will be a high-energy session! Participants will experience the student perspective of these activities, while learning concrete ways to make language learning more exciting and engaging for their students. Participants will leave with practical ideas and strategies for increasing student engagement and interest and inspiration to modify them to suit their own styles and personalities. These methods have been effective in 6th-8th grade classes, but would be useful for teachers of students from about 4th-10th grade. Applies to: Lower, Middle, Upper, All Languages

Interculturality by hosting an International Festival | Jacqueline Lopez, Forsyth Country Day School | Lecture Hall
Emphasis will be placed on giving students ownership of this event by encouraging them to have a major voice in the planning, production, and decoration of the festival. Students give insight into the products, perspectives, and practices of their own cultures in several different ways: an international dining experience, a talent show, and finally an international marketplace where the student body can wander through a beautifully decorated area of campus to learn about the represented languages and cultures. Applies to: All Languages, Upper School focus.

1:00 PM         Student Performance, performed by Ella Yan and Ray Wang
Jay Chou is a singer, songwriter, rapper, actor, etc. Dubbed the "King of Mondopop".
The song depicts the beautiful scenery of the Southern states (the region south of the Yangtze River)                              against the background of blue and white porcelain made during the Song Dynasty. The song tells a                               reincarnation of a love story related to blue and white porcelain.

1:15 PM        Breakout Session III | 45 Minutes | Select One
Teaching with co-created characters and "Write and Discuss" |  Kristin Boone, Forsyth Country Day School | Auditorium
Applies to: Lower/Middle, All Languages

“One Word Image”, created by Ben Slavic and Tina Hargaden, uses the principles of storytelling to teach a world language. This method is a wonderful, compelling, and interesting approach because the class creates the image together. My students have loved this activity and ask for it often. Perhaps even more encouraging, is all the information, and therefore Spanish, they remember about each character and how motivated they are to find the vocabulary to talk about their creation in the target language. These stories are the venue to “teach” the target language. Recently, I have begun using this same methodology to target more complex grammar and vocabulary. By using two characters we have created more dialogue and even richer language input.
