Named after Jeanne Baret, the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, Baret Scholars is a global gap year program that brings together a cohort of 180 outstanding high school students from around the world to live a month each in 7 regions, across 5 continents, over the course of 200 days. These scholars will explore their personal interests in different regions via prominent local speakers, curated traveling Fellowships, and optional volunteer opportunities.

Baret Scholars’ mission is to provide students with a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the world, paving the way for years of fulfillment and achievement. The program serves as a foundation for the scholars' future, fostering cultural literacy, a global perspective, and a desire to create a better world.

SPEAKERS:

  • Jaein Seo, Head of North America at Baret Scholars: Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Jaein grew up in Northern California and attended Harvard University, where she was actively involved with The Harvard Crimson (school newspaper) and started a leadership conference for high school students in Korea, China, and Dubai. After graduation, Jaein worked across multiple industries, including management consulting (Bain), tech (Google), telecomm (Verizon), and insurance (Lemonade). As the Head of North America for Baret Scholars, Jaein leads program development and student recruitment for the region, and also heads up its marketing efforts. In her spare time, Jaein enjoys going for long walks in the streets of New York City, while listening to podcasts at 2x speed.

  • Matt Garza, guest speaker: Matt is a graduate of Phillips Andover and UNC Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead-Cain Scholar. He deferred his start at Carolina to undertake a gap year, during which he worked in Mexico and Paraguay on public health and nutrition projects. He also waited tables and sold computers to fund travel around the Pacific Rim, visited New Zealand, Australia and China, and went mountain-climbing in Patagonia. He received a prestigious Truman Scholarship to pursue a Masters in public administration, but instead launched his career as an economic researcher at the Brookings Institution. He has since led multiple startups to launch and improve digital products in finance, real estate, and business incubation.
