Sexual Behaviors in Young Children: Strengthening Child Safety Through Knowledge and Response
Creating a safe school environment requires both strong child protection systems and a clear understanding of child development. This session will equip participants to recognize the difference between typical sexual development and problematic sexual behavior (PSB) in young children, respond using age-appropriate language, and understand when intervention is needed.
Participants will also explore safety planning, and school-based best practices that support children and families. With practical guidance on policies, procedures, staff training, and collaboration with external agencies, this session will help schools strengthen a culture where every child feels seen, heard, and protected.
Objectives:
-
Recognize typical and problematic sexual behavior in young children
-
Respond appropriately using developmentally informed language
-
Identify warning signs
-
Apply best practices for safety planning and school-based support
